Day 4: Venture to Vaxholm

The Stockholm Archipelago

Extending eastward into the Baltic Sea is the 30,000-island Stockholm Archipelago. For only a few dollars, we took a public ferry to the island of Vaxholm - a charming and idyllic community away from the city and its suburbs, but accessible in only an hour.

We left Stockholm early, before the clouds cleared, and enjoyed a brisk and striking view from the ferry’s deck of Stockholm, its outlying communities, and the near Archipelago.

Our several hours in Vaxholm included a charming walk through the historic town center, including a visit to the historic town hall and courthouse, and along the northern waterfront which featured traditional fishermen’s homes and a delightful restaurant, the Hembygdsgards Cafe, where we had wonderful sandwiches and salad, followed by a visit to the incredible pastry bar.
