Day 6: Stayover in Sigtuna

Sweden’s First Town

Sigtuna, located north of Stockholm and easy travel distance from the Arlanda Airport, is Sweden’s oldest town and former capitol, founded by Viking Erik the Victorious in 980 AD. Before returning home to NYC, we hopped on a commuter train in Central Stockholm, and then a short local bus ride into Sigtuna for an overnight visit in this lovely town.

The Room

As in Stockholm, Airbnb was far more affordable than the high quality hotels in town. We stayed in a small but comfortable lakeside cabin on the grounds of the owner’s home (which appears to be no longer available on Airbnb). We chose a property that was walkable from the bus station and the rest of the quaint downtown.

The View

We spent our short time in Sigtuna visiting the charming shops and restaurants downtown, as well as the Viking runestones (raised inscribed stones commemorating early Christians and culture in the area) and the ruins of several 12th and 13th Century Christian churches. We enjoyed Swedish fare, including a final great meatball meal at Cafe Valvet, and wonderful baked goods and beverages at Balder’s Brod (bread).

Getting Around

Sigtuna proper is highly walkable, and that is what we did. We traveled from Stockholm to Sigtuna by commuter train and then bus, and from Sigtuna to Arlanda Airport by bus.
